It’s my oldest’s 20th birthday today and since she’s home for the summer, we’ll be eating apple pie tonight. Her birthday has me feeling nostalgic. Of the many highlights we’ve had as a family, traveling has been one of the best. We made great effort when the kids were little to be sure to travel, knowing full well, eventually they will be off doing their own thing. If you have little kids, and you hope to travel as a family, my suggestion is, don’t wait until it works, don’t wait until you can afford it, just try to make it happen and figure out the rest later. Time flies. Suddenly they are full grown and adulting and while you’ll have time to travel, it may not be all together.
So I hopped into my computer today and happened upon this travel to Peru. Since I can only fit a so many photos in one post I thought I’d highlight our stop near and at Machu Picchu, which, for all its popularity, deserves every bit. It is mind boggling. Crowds be damned, its very existence in the steep mountains of Peru doesn’t calculate. As you scroll through the photos pause and take a look at the stone work. Look at the size of the stones. Look at their placement. And then remember that it was all done at the top of a mountain, and most of the rocks came from far, far below, and were placed by hand.
These pictures include the village we stayed at on our way up to Machu Picchu as well as our day visiting the site. We showed up during torrential rain, but by the end of the day all had sunburn. We took this trip about 10 years ago. Machu Picchu I’m sure looks the exact same today.
Went there a couple years ago and absolutely loved it. It's still one of my favorite trips, and I am always stunned looking back at the views and the engineering!
It is a magical place, in a magical country filled with magical people. We went almost 20 years ago before kids. It was the last trip we took before parenthood. Now it's time to go back and show them.
